KENTUCKY (KFVS) - Residents have a chance to comment on a draft agreement for protecting historic sites in highway projects.

According to a news release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the draft Kentucky Section 106 Programmatic Agreement determines how federally funded transportation projects comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

KYTC is partnering with the Federal Highway Administration for the public feedback.

They say Section 106 requires agencies to consider the affects these projects would have on historic properties such as buildings, structures, sites, districts or objects that are significant because of their association with important historical events, people, etc.

Many of the resources are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

According to KYTC, the draft agreement establishes the process used to identify historic properties that may be affected by projects, evaluate possible impacts and determine how any adverse effects can be avoided, minimized or mitigated.

You can see the draft agreement and other forms used to document project review online here under the Cultural Resources section.

The public has 30 says to review and make comments.

Comments may be sent by standard mail or email to Daniel B. Davis and will be accepted through July 16 at daniel.davis@ky.gov or Daniel B. Davis, Environmental Control Manager, Cultural Resource Branch, Division of Environmental Analysis, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, 200 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY 40622.
