MISSOURI (KFVS) - If dogs or cats are not animals you would like to give a forever home, the Humane Society of Missouri and Longmeadow Rescue Ranch hope you might consider a bird.

January is Adopt a Rescued Bird Month in the state of Missouri.

The Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch says it has dozens of homeless birds, like chickens, guineas, ducks and turkeys which are available for adoption now.

You may need to do a little research before adopting a new feathered friend. Some city ordinances don not allow some fowl to legally be pets.

Those interested in adopting can visit Longmeadow Rescue Ranch on Fridays from Noon until 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rescue is located in Union, Mo. which is in Franklin County.

According to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, besides companionship, the following are advantages feathery friends can bring you:

  • Pest patrol:  guineas, a type of fowl, are great at ridding your yard of ticks, insects, small snakes and rodents.
  • Man’s Best (Feathered) Friend: Peking ducks, the most popular domestic duck in America, have a nice temperament and make excellent pets. They often follow their owners around like a dog.
  • Home-grown eggs: backyard chickens have become common companions for families interested in having fresh eggs.
