CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Heavy rain across the Heartland means headaches for anyone dealing with a flooded basement.

Plumber Bill Bonney says when the rain comes down this hard, he gets a lot of calls from folks with flooded basements and he says there are some easy things you can do to try and stop it.

"Make sure your gutter lines go away from the house and make sure they work actually work, an easy way to tell that is when it rains you look at the gutter and if it's boiling out water it's not working," said Bonney.

Bonney says if the water from the gutter isn't going away from the house, consider getting a sump pump.

"There's nothing wrong with a sump pump I've had very few service calls on a sump pump," said Bonney. "They're sealed up now and they do a lot better job, put a sump pump in.. I mean there is nothing wrong with these sump pumps."

Bonney says you should check for leaks while it's raining so you can identify where the rain is coming in.
