NWS: At least 3 tornadoes hit parts of the Heartland on March 15
PADUCAH, Ky. (KFVS) - Following additional damage surveys on Tuesday, the National Weather Service confirmed a third tornado touched down in southeast Missouri on Sunday, March 15.
The NWS said an EF0 tornado touched down just east of Baird at around 6:44 p.m. between County Roads 316 and 320, overturning multiple center pivots.
The tornado then continued into the town of Clarkton, causing roof damage to a state school and a convenience store, as well as multiple homes along Page Street just south of W. Highway 162.
Additional damage happened to an outbuilding south of E. Highway 162, with debris spreading into a nearby field. The tornado lifted just before the town of Gideon, at around 6:50 p.m.
According to the NWS, the length of the tornado’s path was 2.94 miles with a max width of 75 yards. Its winds peaked at 85 mph.
On Monday, the NWS initially confirmed two tornadoes touched down in the Heartland.
The first, an EF1, touched down just north of Highway 72 about 2 miles southwest of Sedgewickville in Bollinger County at around 6:19 p.m. The length of the tornado’s path was 7.8 miles, with a max width of 100 yards. Peak winds were 105 mph.
The NWS said several outbuildings and barns were damaged, ranging from the roof being blown off to walls blown over and one that was completely destroyed. There were numerous trees damaged, with some uprooted, and lots of larger limbs that were broken.
This tornado continued east, crossing into Cape Girardeau County, where it flipped over a livestock trailer. It moved across MO-AA before eventually lifting about 1 mile west of Daisy, the NWS said.
Then, a second EF1 briefly touched down in Cape Girardeau County at around 6:32 p.m., just east of Interstate 55 along County Road 510. The NWS said the length of the path was about a half-mile, with the max width at 50 yards. Peak winds reached 97 mph.
The NWS survey found that a couple of mobile homes had significant roof damage, along with one being shifted off its foundation. A couple of outbuildings also had some damage.
NWS crews will continue their preliminary surveys in the Heartland, so more tornadoes may be confirmed.
