CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - A Southern Illinois University-Carbondale associate professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, is leading an international team of researchers on a project to integrate AI and sixth-generation (6G) wireless.

According to SIU, Gayan Aruma Baduge is working with researchers from SIU and Villanova University in the United States and Aalto University of Finland on the three-year project.

SIU said Baduge’s work centers on developing the theoretical foundations of the technology, designing wireless systems that can integrate mobile communications and environment imaging and sensing in future wireless systems.

“The 6G wireless systems with integrated sensing and communication functionalities can be useful for environmental monitoring, vehicular networks, remote sensing,” Baduge said in a released statement. “It would also facilitate the creation of smart cities while improving industry, manufacturing and agriculture.”

Baduge hopes to design a structure where 6G and AI systems work on a single hardware platform by using a unified waveform. This type of system would be able to process signals from various sensors while handling typical cell phone and data transmission.

The project is funded by a $1.13 million grant. SIU’s portion of the grant, $336,500, comes from the National Science Foundation.
