Southern IL doctor sentenced to prison for health care fraud

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - A southern Illinois doctor was sentenced on Thursday to 16 months in prison for health care fraud.

Dr. Sukhdarshan S. Bedi, 56, pleaded guilty on Nov. 4, 2009 and was sentenced on two counts of obstruction of justice, tampering with a witness and illegally giving out Methadone.

Bedi will serve eight months in the Bureau of Prisons, eight months on home confinement and then three years of supervised release.

Bedi has also turned in his medical license and withdrew his application of reinstatement for DEA registration.

Three corporations owned by Bedi also pleaded guilty on Nov. 4, 2009. They were sentenced for conspiracy to illegally give out Methadone and health care fraud.

The corporations were put on probation for one year and had to each pay $400.

In addition to those conditions, a total restitution of nearly $50,000 was ordered paid to the Illinois Medicaid Program, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney of the Southern District of Illinois.
