TBI releases new details; Ohio woman charged with murder in shooting death of Weakley County deputy
WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. (KFVS) - An Ohio woman was charged with murder in the shooting death of Weakley County, Tennessee Deputy Derrick Bonham.
Khristi Dawn Cunningham, 44, of Ohio, is charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the Obion County Jail without bond.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, the shooting happened early in the morning on Friday, January 30.
According to the arrest warrant from TBI, just before 3 a.m., Khristi Cunningham called 911 to report “shots fired” at the Days Inn while firing a shot from a pistol at or near the Days Inn parking lot.
They say she then drove to the parking lot of Pocket’s convenience store and parked to watch Martin, Tenn. police arrive at the Days Inn.
During that time, Cunningham allegedly continued to call 911 and hang up.
According to TBI, law enforcement used the GPS location of Cunningham’s cell phone, which placed her at or near the convenience store.
They say Weakley County Sheriff’s Deputy Derrick Bonham arrived at Pocket’s and parked beside Cunningham’s vehicle. She was allegedly on a call with 911 at the time.
When the call ended, they say Deputy Bonham asked her to get out of her vehicle.
They say according to Bonham’s body-worn camera, Cunningham got out of the vehicle, pulled a pistol and shot him.
She’s accused of shooting him three more times while he was lying on the ground.
According to the TBI arrest warrant, Cunningham then fired two more shots in the direction of Martin, Tenn. police officers who were in the Days Inn parking lot.
TBI investigators report that Martin, Tennessee police officers arrested Cunningham.
Deputy Bonham was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.
