St. Vincent girls soccer advances to state
Lady Indians overcome St. Charles 3-2 in quarterfinal round
PERRYVILLE, Mo. (KFVS) - St. Vincent’s girl’s athletics programs deserve a new nickname: State Vincent.
The Lady Indians reached state for volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and now soccer in the spring, after St. Vincent took down St. Charles 3-2 in overtime.
Saturday’s contest started strong for the home team, with sophomore Grace Jennemann delivering a free kick effort to Western Illinois commit Abigail Schilling, who slotted it straight into the net, putting St. Vincent up 1-0.
A moment later, Sadie Cissell got on the receiving end of a through ball, guiding it past St. Charles’ keeper for the second score.
The Lady Indians had firm control at the half, but suddenly two quick goals from the Pirates had the game even again at 2.
While the Pirates threatened for a third, St. Vincent regained its composure, with junior and Mizzou commit Lana Adams leading the charge.
Lana Adams orchestrated the team’s attacks all night, battling through an extremely physical Pirates defense that sent her tumbling on multiple occasions.
Ultimately, St. Charles’ physicality, led to their downfall.
In overtime, Morgan Schnurbusch was brought down in the box, giving St. Vincent a penalty kick and the chance to win on a golden goal.
Adams lined up to take the penalty kick.
Her 50th goal of the season punched the Lady Indians ticket to the state semifinals.
After the celebration, Adams put the focus back on her team, “I mean, it’s awesome,” Adams said. “50 goals doesn’t really matter to me. I mean, it’s winning. It’s going to state. That’s the big thing. We’ve been working all season. Some people might have doubted us but we’re here and we’re working hard, and this is where we want to be.
St. Vincent will face Logan-Rogersville in the state semifinals, Friday, June 6, at 2:30 p.m., at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton.
