Attacks on reproductive clinics could be considered terrorism under proposed state law
PEORIA (25News Now) - A new bill at the statehouse would consider attacks on abortion clinics as terrorism.
Planned Parenthood of Illinois is supporting HB2679, which would declare any attacks on reproductive clinics as terrorism.
Back in January 2023, the location in Peoria was firebombed. The perpetrator, Tyler Massengill, pleaded guilty and is now serving up to a decade in prison and paying a fine of $1,450,000.
The clinic closed for a year for repairs. The windows of the Knoxville Avenue building are now covered.
Chief of External Affairs for Planned Parenthood Illinois Action, Cristina Villarreal, said PPIA supports the efforts to protect clinic access, patients, and providers.
Villareal said in the statement that the year-long closing of the clinic “robbed the community of needed care,” such as family planning, cancer screenings, birth control, and STI testing.
“We understand that addressing access to sexual and reproductive health care through criminal law is complicated, and we appreciate that the conversation is being had,” said Villarreal. “We are working with the State Legislature and other State officials on creating an environment that is safe, healthy, and secure for all.”
PPIL reopened its doors in June 2024 after closing for a year.
Lawmakers have less than two weeks until the legislative session wraps up on May 31.
