ORAN, MO (KFVS) - Oran city leaders say the old City Hall building would cost way more than it is worth to restore, but some locals say tearing it down would crush years of memories and history.

"We are probably pushing 150 to 200 thousand dollars," mayor and construction contractor Gary Senciboy said.

Senciboy said the council has already unanimously decided that restoring the building is out of the question.

"It just really needs to go," Senciboy said.

He said the plan is to demolish it and make room for more parking for existing and future businesses.

"I see a lot of things that the money really needs to be spent on a lot more than just trying to save an old building that really has no value," Senciboy said.

However, not everyone agrees.

"Oran really needs to think about it," Darlene Brooks said.

Brooks said she has many memories in the old building, memories she wants preserved in the brick and mortar.

"That's Oran. That's part of Oran and if we let the building go, you know, what else is going to go," Brooks said.

Many others spoke out on Facebook.

One woman said, "Why in the world is that building to be torn down? Lots of history, lots of good memories."

"They're heartbroken just like I am, you know," Brooks said.

She said she understands the cost to restore may be high, but in her mind, it's worth it.

"Maybe we could pull together, and restore it, and you know, cherish it," Brooks said.

While the council has already decided to demolish the building, there will be a town hall meeting Tuesday, May 10 at 6:30.

Some people who disagree with the council's decision say they'll be there.
