DUTCHTOWN, MO (KFVS) -

One elderly couple in Cape Girardeau County woke up to a huge surprise Dec.29.

A crew of guys from Teen Challenge in Cape Girardeau showed up to a home in Dutchtown ready to work. And it wasn't just a few; it was more like 20.

All of them filled and stacked sandbags to help the pair brace for the worst.

One at a time, bag after bag, Teen Challenge worked through the morning and into the afternoon for the couple.

Kenny Lindsay was able to put up his own levee during the flood of 1993, but with his age, and a bout of pneumonia he didn’t know what he was going to do.

"I was kinda wanting to wait and see if the water did get up to the 48.5 level," Lindsay said.

However, with the water levels rising, a life-long neighbor made the call to Teen Challenge.

"I just can’t stand to see a man lose his house," Don, their neighbor, said. "Kenny and Roxie are so deserving. They’re great people."

The guys worked hard hauling bags and shoveling sand.

Even though it was a tough job, the guys believe they are getting something out of it too.

"I think it’s an honor to come out here and serve this man – I think it’s an honor," Teen Challenge staff member Brian Schmidt said.

The couple welcomed the workers into his home for lunch and provided them with sandwiches, drinks, and snacks before they went out to finish the job.

Lindsay says he’s grateful for their generosity.

"I’m just really thankful for them. I don’t know what to say," Lindsay said. "It’s just a surprise to me we can get this kind of help."

"It just makes us feel loved," Schmidt said. "Knowing that they just love us enough to spend time with us, care for us, and love on us, it really means a lot to us."

Lindsay’s neighbor believes they all have something to be thankful for.

"Just be grateful if you live on a hill, and be thankful for that, and help out those that aren’t as fortunate."

Teen Challenge is a faith based drug rehabilitation program. Many of its members say the program has changed their lives for the better.
