Young American males most likely to sympathize with ISIS in the U.S.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A study from George Washington University shows the average ISIS sympathizer in the U.S. are young males and mostly American.

The group from the universitys program on extremism studied ISIS-related activity in the U.S. in recent years.

The report, which was published just one day before the San Bernardino mass shooting, examined records of people arrested and convicted on terrorism charges as well as other Americans known to have connections to ISIS.

Researchers found 71 people have been charged with terrorism related crimes since March, 2014. In 2015, 56 people, who have a connection to ISIS, have been arrest. Thats the most terror-related arrests in a year since 9/11.

They found ISIS supporters did not have a common background, age or place of origin. However, 86 percent of those arrested are male, the average age is 26 and most are American citizens.

The study shows the terror group is active on Twitter. They use the social media platform to communicate and recruit new members.

Researchers hope the findings will give a better understanding of how and why extremist ideas spread in the U.S.
