Heat impacts Grand American Trapshooting Championship

Posted: Updated:
SPARTA, IL (KFVS) -

The heat is already making an impact on the first day of Sparta's Grand American Trapshooting Championship.

With more than 30,000 people expected in Sparta over the next 10 days, organizers aren't taking any chances.

They tell us they have cooling centers set up for folks as well as an abundance of water on hand so everyone can stay hydrated.

Officials say in past years, an average of 100 or so people have needed medical attention because of things like dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Those we spoke with say this heat is no joke.

"It gets in your mind first and foremost," said Larry Holowinski from Chicago. "If you take a few precautions, eat light, lots of fluid … I wet down my cap."

The event runs through August 13 in Sparta.
