Mizzou reports computer security breach
By: Associated Press
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Law officers are investigating a security breach on the University of Missouri computer system that compromised the names and social security numbers of more than 22,000 employees.
The university says the 22,396 people affected were employees across the university system in 2004 who were also students on the Columbia campus. The university is working to contact the people who were affected.
The breach was noticed last week when technicians noticed a series of errors caused by faulty queries. Techinicians then disabled the account, which was being used by two IP addresses to access the database from China and Australia.
University police and the FBI have been notified.
The university has set up a telephone hot line and a Web page to provide more information.
