Kids tied down with bungee cords while riding in truck bed, WA police say

PUYALLUP, WA (KIRO/CNN) – A mother is facing charges in Washington state after police said they found her children riding in a truck bed, secured only by bungee cords.

The incident happened earlier this month.

Police investigated after a passerby saw the truck and called them.

Officers said an 8-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl were under a tarp that was held down by bungee cords, which "were not enough to properly secure the juveniles in the back of the vehicle," the Puyallup Police Department said in the arrest report.

"When I got out of jail I couldn't even call and let them know that everything was OK, and it wasn't their fault, because I know that they're going to feel that it's their fault," said Ambrosia Jurado, the mother facing charges.

Jurado said the kids wanted to ride in the back.

When asked how the juveniles felt about riding in the back, both kids said "fun," according to police.

"Neither child seemed to understand the danger of traveling at speeds that were in excess of 60 mph in the bed of a truck and not secured inside of a vehicle cabin with seat belts, all while being exposed to the dangers of not having a cabin to be secured within," the arrest report said.

Police arrested Jurado and the driver, 48-year-old Philip Wells.

Capt. Ryan Portmann of Puyallup Police said there was "the potential to great bodily harm, if not death, had there been a car accident."

Police said they also found used needles and traces of heroin they believe belong to Wells.

When asked about the danger of having the children in the back, Wells said, "It was kind of reckless," and went on to say, "They could have gotten hurt," according to police.

Jurado said she knows her mistake could land her behind bars.

"I would love forgiveness – from my kids, though, because the person I'm sorry for is them," she said.

Jurado is charged with reckless endangerment. Wells faces charges of reckless endangerment and delivery of drug paraphernalia.
