MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Jackson County, Illinois Health Department held a back to school health and activity fair on August 7.
They hosted a number of local health services such as Dental Safari, Shawnee Health, the Women's Center and many others.
During the event they gave away free school supplies and books, and also provided an opportunity for kids to get their immunization shots, get hearing tests, and get a dental check before kids head back into school.
Parents could also drive up and get their car seats inspected by the at to see if they were properly installed by Jackson County Sheriff's Department for their babies, as well as get healthy eating tips among other things.
Sarah Patrick the Jackson County Health Department Administrator talked about why it was important to have this back to school event.
"We know that education is one of the strongest social determinates possible, and so anything we can do to get them ready for school and help support that positive school environment we know will pay off for the community for years and years to come, because a healthy kid is a healthy community in the future," Sarah Patrick, Administrator, Jackson County Health Department said.
