Free breakfast, lunch for students in Cape Girardeau school district
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - There is good news for parents in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri school district. No more lunch money.
Both breakfast and lunch will be free for every student in the district for 2018-19.
The superintendent says studies show children who are well fed do better in the classroom. But he says there's another reason for the new program as well.
"We're hoping that we can eliminate some of the stigma that was tied to the free and reduced lunch program," said Neil Glass, Superintendent. "Some students that were eligable for the free or reduced lunch program were shy or bashful about taking advantage of that. We're hoping that by offering all of our breakfasts and lunches for free that we reduce some of that stigma. But for our families, it's going to be a huge win for them."
The district is able to pay for the food, thanks to "The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act Of 2010."
Extra items will still be available for kids to buy at lunchtime if they wish. Cape Girardeau Public Schools start classes August 16.
