CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS/AP) - Usually, on your birthday you want to spend the day relaxing, but one Cape Girardeau man decided this year to celebrate his 55th birthday he would put his body to the test.

Shannon Aldridge is an avid runner and he said people ask him why he just didn't run the 55 miles.

"I've done that before and I wanted to do something I've never done before and I think that's apart of life doing new experiences," said Aldridge while on his 41st mile.

But Aldridge said he wasn't always able to do this at one point because he weighed nearly 300 pounds.

"I think you've got to look in the mirror sometimes and ask yourself are you all you want to be? I wasn't, I wanted more and so I went out and got more," said Aldridge.

Tamantha Crowson manages Snap Fitness and she says Aldridge radiates positivity and what he's done is an inspiration.

"Why not celebrate the fact that you still can do things like that and make it fun and stay active," said Crowson.
