82-year-old man facing federal charge for Benton, IL bank robbery
BENTON, IL (KFVS) - A Marion man has been charged for the Thursday, July 26 robbery of a Benton, IL bank.
It happened at 9:07 a.m. at the State Bank of Whittington on N. Main Street in Benton.
82-year-old Arthur W. Bays of Marion was charged by the United States Attorney in United States District Court with one count of bank robbery on Friday, July 27.
Bays faces up to 20 years of prison and up to a $25,000 fine
According to the FBI, Bays entered the bank, showed a handgun and requested money from the tellers.
He fled the scene in a sedan and then later was arrested at his home on the 1100 Block of West Main Street in Marion.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken.
No one was injured.
According to Benton Police Chief Kyle Melvin, his department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, West Frankfort and West City Police Departments and the FBI are investigating the armed robbery.
The State Bank of Whittington is off of the square in Benton.
