CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - This is the time of year when veterinarians say they are seeing more cases of kennel cough.

Doctor Sean Byrd of Skyview Animal Clinic in Cape Girardeau, says it's not because of the summer heat, but because of summer behavior.

Summer is a time when people tend to go on vacation.

According to Byrd, that means more pets get boarded while they're owners are away, and, he says, it's fairly easy for the cough to spread.

"You have one dog that coughs in there, it's airborne, spreads throughout the kennel and so that's why it's called kennel cough but, it could happen just as easily outside between two dogs, that can be spread that way.  It's pretty easy to spread it back and forth," said Sean Byrd with Skyview Animal Clinic.

Doctor Byrd says the cough usually goes away in about a week or so.

If you're concerned he says you should take your dog to your veterinarian.
