Carterville, IL man arrested after holding 2 women and 3 children hostage

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) - Carterville Police responded to reports of a man making threats to harm himself and others.

According to police, once officers arrived things escalated and Montez Avant, 28, of Carterville, Ill., barricaded himself in a home with two women and three children, ages two months, two years old and four years old.

Crainville Police and the Williamson County Sheriff's Office assisted and secured the area. Avant said he has several weapons and intended to harm himself. After Avant refused to let the people leave, police entered and arrested Avant.

One of the females was transported to the emergency room for non-life threatening injuries. The others inside the residence were unharmed.

Avant was transported to the emergency room for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries before being transported to the Williamson County Jail on charges of Unlawful Restraint, Child Endangerment, Possession of a Look-alike Substance with Intent to Distribute, Aggravated Battery to a Child, Domestic Battery, Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer, and Criminal Trespass to State Supported Property.
