Cairo community members helping people affected by HUD housing deadline

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) - Members of the Cairo, Ill. community are helping those affecting by the H.U.D. housing deadline.

People are buying houses and renovating for the twenty families still living in the housing facility.

Cairo High School Principal Lisa Thomas explains why she is rolling up he sleeves to help.

"It's so important for me because I'm trying to do what I want someone else to do for me," said Thomas. "It's something that my mother would have done. and that's what we attempt to do to live out her legacy. She was someone that always provided a place for others that did not have a place."

US Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin sent a letter to Secretary Carson urging HUD to avoid evicting Cairo residents.

Even though HUD says they are not evicting anyone right now, they urge the families that are left to start the process as soon as possible.
