JONESBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Jonesboro, Illinois Farm Services building was destroyed by fire on Thursday night, June 28.
According to Jonesboro Fire Chief Tim Bowen, Jonesboro and Anna fire departments were called out at 11:08 p.m. to the Southern FS Inc. building on S. Main Street in Jonesboro.
The chief said the building was already fully engulfed in flames, and a hazardous materials team was called in to help. The building contained dry fertilizer and corrosive chemicals.
The building was said to be a total loss.
According to Chief Bowen, hazardous materials officials asked fire crews to stop spraying water on the building because of the risk of contaminating a nearby creek with the corrosive chemicals housed in the building.
The chief said a neighbor told fire officials they witnessed lightning striking an old radio antenna attached to the building shortly before the fire started.
The building had power and gas utilities connected, so officials suspect the lightning strike likely caused the fire.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt.
