CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Christmas came early for one family in southeast Missouri.

Thanks to complete strangers who were in the right place at the right time, a couple from Jackson is reunited with their cat who had been missing for over a year.

According to posts on the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri's Facebook page, Jake and Amy Elfrink were shopping at Menards on Sunday, December 18. As they were about to leave, they spotted a black cat in a nearby field that was limping. With temperatures dipping to single digits that night, the pair decided to help out. They were eventually able to capture the cat and brought him to the Humane Society.

Just one day later, the cat is back in his original home. His owners, Rachel and Scott Wright, say the cat's name is Blue. Blue went for a car ride with neighbors last year to Sears. When they opened the door, he ran away and has been missing ever since.

The Facebook post says that the reunion lead to "tears of joy."
