(KFVS) - You will likely see a large law enforcement presence where ever you go for the next several weeks.

It's all part of a nationwide effort to save lives by keeping the roads safe.

State, county, and local departments across the country have plans to conduct extra patrols to keep drunk and/or distracted drivers off the road.

According to Illinois State Police, alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in more than 30 percent of all deadly crashes in the state.

Nationwide, about a third of all traffic deaths involve one or more substance-impaired drivers.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department reports that enforcement efforts like the 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign reduces substance impaired driving deaths by as much as 20 percent.
