MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - The Christmas season is upon us and many are finalizing their plans for travel and gifts.

For several people, it means ordering items and having them delivered to ease the pains of shopping.

Although it may be easy to just have packages and gifts delivered to your home there are some who like to take advantage of this and use the opportunity to steal your packages.

The Murray Police Department has taken a few reports recently of stolen packages and the police department would like to provide a few tips that may help you keep your packages safer if you are not able to be home when it is delivered.

Provide delivery instructions.

If you have a place out of sight from a passerby provide instructions to have it placed there. Packages that are out of sight are less likely to get stolen.

Utilize signature upon delivery.

This way if you are not there in person the carrier will not leave it and you can pick it up later or they will attempt to deliver again when someone is home.

This way your package is not left sitting out.

Have the item delivered to a family member or friend who would be home during the time of delivery.

They can hold on to it for you temporarily until you can get it.

If your workplace allows it have the item delivered to you at work.

With Christmas approaching, you want to get those special gifts to your friends and family.
