Football helmets recalled due to head injury hazard

(KFVS) - More than 5,000 football helmets are being recalled because the shells of the helmets can crack.

There have been 29 reports of cracking helmets, but no injuries have been linked to them.

The company said that if they do crack, the player is at risk of head injuries.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Xenith is recalling the following models:

• Xenith Epic Varsity
• Xenith X2 Varsity
• Xenith X2E Varsity and Youth

The affected helmets have a gloss or metallic-painted polycarbonate shell that was sold or factory-reconditioned between May 1, 2015 and March 18, 2016.

They were sold in multiple sizes and in varying colors and custom-paint designs.

According to the CPSC, the helmets in question have a facemask and a chin cup.

You can find the serial number on a white sticker inside the top of the helmet. You'll find a list of the serial numbers included in the recall here.

If you have one of the affected helmets, you should stop using it immediately.

Parents, coaches, and players should contact Xenith to receive a free replacement helmet.

They were sold through team dealers and direct school sales along with several other retail outlets.

The company estimates about 5,900 units are involved in the recall.
