WANTED: Fugitive in Pope Co., IL

Search is on in Pope Co. for man that should be behind bars

POPE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Pope County, Illinois Sheriff's Department is asking for the public's help finding an escapee.

According to Pope County Sheriff Jerry Suits, Matthew C. Werner was supposed to return to the Saline County Jail in Harrisburg on Wednesday night after an approved furlough.

Sheriff Suits said Werner agreed to turn himself in before 7:30 p.m. to Saline County Jail authorities and/or Pope County sheriff's officials, but failed to do so.

Werner was last seen in Saline County by family members at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 3. He was wearing blue jeans, brown t-shirt and black tennis shoes.

He is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 215 pounds.

Sheriff Suits said Werner has a full beard, but may have shaved it after his escape.

Werner was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for residential burglary.

The sheriff is asking residents to be on the lookout for Werner and advises citizens to not approach him, but to call the Pope County sheriff at 618-683-4321 or their local law enforcement agency.
