MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A Mississippi County couple are behind bars after they allegedly left three children in a hot car so they could make an appearance in court.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, a deputy was walking into the courthouse when he noticed a bailiff and custodian standing with a girl holding an 11-month-old baby. The child's face was beet red, according to the sheriff.

An investigation revealed the parents, Allana Wheatley and Bradley Wheatley, left the kids in the car with no air conditioning running so they could attend their court appearance.

Allana Wheatley said the car did have air conditioning, but that it must have stopped working while they were inside.

Sheriff Moore said he believes one of the kids may have accidentally turned the air conditioning off while they were waiting for the Wheatley's to come out. He said the parents were in court for more than an hour.

Allana Wheatley went on to tell investigators that she left the kids in the vehicle because the last two times she was in court, she was told to leave the courtroom because the baby was crying, according to the sheriff.

Allana Wheatley and Bradley Wheatley were both arrested and charged with 3 counts of abuse or neglect of a child, and 3 counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety each.
