CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Authorities say the Missouri couple accused of kidnapping and theft across multiple states were allegedly involved in a robbery and police chase through Cape Girardeau County.

A nationwide manhunt for Blake Fitzgerald and Brittany Harper, both 31 and from Joplin, Missouri, kicked off after they began a crime spree across three cities in Alabama on Sunday, Jan. 31.

According to Capt. David James with Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, the same couple is suspected of stealing a Cadillac from Webb City, Missouri before committing the alleged crimes in Alabama.

Capt. James reports the same couple was also involved in a theft from a Ste. Genevieve motel on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016.

The Perry County Sheriff's Office chased the couple down I-55 after the reported theft. However, deputies lost sight of the Cadillac when they went down Route D in Oak Ridge.

Capt. James said the couple then broke into a home in Oak Ridge, Missouri, in Cape Girardeau County. They couple allegedly dumped the Cadillac at this home, and stole the Trailblazer inside of the home's garage.

That Trailblazer was later found Monday in Alabama.

Tuscaloosa police say the couple robbed a hotel there on Sunday morning and allegedly kidnapped the clerk. They dropped the clerk off a short time later. He was not hurt.

They then allegedly tried to rob a fast food restaurant manager just before 8 a.m. on Sunday. That manager got away by creating a distraction and yelling for her co-workers.

About 15 minutes later, Hoover, Alabama police say Fitzgerald and Harper committed a home invasion and robbery, kidnapping a woman from that home.

The search for a couple wanted in the multi-state crime spree ended Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 in a deadly shootout.

Police confirms, Blake Fitzgerald was killed and Brittany Harper was wounded in the leg after a chase and shootout with law enforcement in northwest Florida, near Pensacola.
