JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - One man is dead after a prison transport van and a semi collided Wednesday morning, Jan. 20.

Illinois State Police report the incident happened just before 8 a.m. in the southbound lane of I-57 near mile post 84.

A prison transport van belonging to the Marion County Sheriff's Department was travelling northbound when it encountered slick, hazardous road conditions.

The van slid across the road into the median and ended up in the southbound lanes of I-57 directly in the path of a semi. The semi, driven by Donald D. Chambers, 46, of Springville, Indiana, hit the van, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

The semi jackknifed and came to rest in the right lane and the van came to rest in the left lane.

Marion County Sheriff's Department Correctional Officer Adam S. Conrad, 22, of Sandoval, was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

A 17-year-old passenger with Conrad was also transported to a local hospital for treatment of incapacitating injuries.

Traffic was diverted off of I-57 South Bound for crash investigation, reconstruction and scene clean-up for approximately six hours.

All lines of traffic are operating normally now.
