Man drowns after high speed chase in Dunklin Co.

CAMPBELL, MO (KFVS) - A man has drowned after a high speed chase in Dunklin County on Thursday December 31, 2015.

Campbell Police responded to the 700 block of West Martin at 8:15 a.m. in reference to a suspicious person parked in the driveway.

A K-9 Officer made contact with a man sitting in the driver seat.

The driver initially gave police a false name, but was later identified as Ricky Lerma, 40, of New Madrid County.

When the officer asked Lerma to step out the vehicle, police say he took off, leading police on a high speed chase.

The pursuit ended on Missouri State Highway DD at the Dunklin/Butler County line after Lerma's vehicle stalled out while attempting to cross a flood zone.

Lerma bailed out of the vehicle and swam to land.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Dunklin County Sheriff's Department, and the Butler County Sheriff's Department were called in to help assist.

A perimeter was set around the area.

Titus, the Campbell K-9, found Lerma swimming along the flooded river.

Police ordered him to return to land, but he refused.

Campbell Police say that is when Lerma drowned.

Police says he had felony warrants in Dunklin County, as well as felony warrants in surrounding counties.
