East Prairie law enforcement partner with 'Heroes for Kids' this Christmas
PERRY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The East Prairie Police Department and the East Prairie Fire Department partnered with the "Heroes for Kids" organization this Christmas to help provide gifts to children in the area.
"Kids for Heroes" is a group focused on bringing together costumed heroes with law enforcement, firefighters and military members in hopes to bring smiles to kids faces and help build community relations.
The organization, started by Lonnie Johnson and his wife in April of this year, asked local law enforcement departments to take part in the event to help deliver Christmas gifts so children can learn to identify law enforcement officials as good guys.
So, of course, authorities agreed to dress up as superheroes.
The organization received toy donations from two local Perryville businesses. The group, along with the police and firefighters (donning their best superhero costumes), handed those out to families on Wednesday, Dec. 23 at the Perry County Sheriffs Office.
After hearing about the family in East Prairie who lost heir home to a fire on Friday, Dec. 18, Johnson said they then took some toys and gifts to that family the following evening.
He said the organization has participated in other events this year with the help from friends, the community and local businesses.
One of the events was for Children's Miracle Network in August.
