Prescribed fires planned at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge

Prescribed fires planned at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge's Fire Management staff is planning prescribed fires as part of an on-going wildlife habitat management program.

Prescribed fires will be conducted within the public and restricted areas of the Refuge starting immediately and continuing through April 2016.

Information signs will be posted during hunting seasons to inform of possible burn dates at the planned prescribed burn units.

Weather conditions will determine individual burn dates.

Fires will be ignited when environmental factors such as temperature, wind direction, relative humidity, and fuel moisture levels are within a very specific range.

Prescribed fires improves forest health and wildlife by encouraging oak-hickory regeneration; reduces shade tolerant species, such as maple and beech; maintains or improves open land habitat; and reduces hazardous fuels and the risk of wildfires.
