Man pleads guilty in deadly bike, car crash

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A Carbondale man pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence involving a death after a crash in November 14, 2014.

A man riding a bicycle died as a result of that crash.

Investigators say 23-year-old Seth Loyd admitted to driving under the influence the morning he he 33-year-old Matthew Dierker.

Dierker was riding his bicycle near the intersection of Old Highway 13 and Bigler Road in Carbondale, which is in Jackson County.

Witnesses told police they saw the car driven by Loyd swerve into the center of the road and then correct across the westbound lane and hit Dierker.

Dierker suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash and was eventually flown to a St. Louis hospital where it was determined his brain was medically dead.

He was pronounced dead the next day, November 15.

Loyd told officers at the scene of the crash that he had been drinking and was texting his mother when he hit the cyclist.

He faces up to 14 years in prison.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
