CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Hundreds came out for the Spirit of '45 event held at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.

This marks the 70th anniversary of the day World War II ended on August 14, 1945. This event is to recognize and honor the legacy of the World War II generation.

Many Veterans were on hand from past wars including dozens from WWII.

Veterans say it is great to see so many people come out and support them and remember the sacrifices for those soldiers that fought so bravely.

Mike Stafford, Corporal Tech 5, U. S. Army was stationed in the Philippines and is now 100 years old.

Stafford feels very loved and supported by so many who came here to honor him and fellow Veterans.

Stafford was also recognized and presented a flag in the flag presentation ceremony.

He then presented the flag to the Missouri Veterans Home where he now resides for the past 10 years.

The flag was donated by the Missouri Honors Team.

The Spirit of '45 Ceremony also included Guest Speaker Retired Air Corp, World War II Veteran John Dragoni Sr. who spoke of his days in WWII and the many that fought and died for America.

The Jackson Muny Band was on hand to perform the opening prelude, TAPS, and other areas of the ceremony including when caps were given out to all WWII Veterans on hand at the event.
