Herrin teen sweeping Grand American shooting tournament

SPARTA, IL (KFVS) - A 13-year-old boy from southern Illinois has taken home first place at three events in the Grand American World Trap Shooting Championship being held at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, Illinois.

The championship is being held August 9 through August 15.

Ian Lawrence, of Herrin, Ill., has been named champion of three events at the Grand American.

Lawrence competed in the sub junior category and won was named champion of the Gipson Ricketts Handicap, Blaser Handicap, and the President Rob Taylor Handicap Presented by Perazzi events.

Lawrence competed against more than 1,000 shooters in each event. He shot a perfect 100 for 100 in the Gipson Ricketts event.

Lawrence said got into trap shooting when he was just 10-years-old and fell in love with the sport.

He said the sport is a lot harder than anybody would think and that it takes a lot of practice and mastering concentration.

"I've shot for three years and I had to practice practice practice and it just my time finally came where I've learned how to focus and concentrated and break 'em all," Lawrence said.

Lawrence plans to compete in several other events this week.
