Sinkhole opens in Murphysboro

Sinkhole in Murphysboro filled in

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A sinkhole has opened up in Murphysboro, Illinois after sewer main collapsed on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses say the street began to sink on Thursday morning.

That's when the hole, nearly 6'5," opened up.

Crews attempted to reach the sewer main - which is about 25 feet deep - despite difficulties due to weather.

Repair was completed on the sewer main around 6 a.m. on Friday.

Crews are currently filling up the hole.

Officials say a boil water test will probably be issued to make sure water is safe.

Mayor Will Stephens says the repair will definitely be an expense to the city, but is unsure of the cost at this time.
