CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Fire crews responded to a large house fire in Cape Girardeau.

According to the fire department, it is considered suspicious.

They say it was a vacant home, but there was furniture inside. The utilities were not functioning in the house, as well.

They say there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

The investigation is ongoing and they do not have a cause at this point

About a dozen firefighters responded to 1022 Jefferson at around 11:28 a.m.

The fire department said there was heavy smoke coming from the second floor windows and soffit.

They say there were four engines and a ladder on call. Three hose lines were pulled to extinguish the fire.

According to the fire department, Jackson sent an engine over to help, along with a vehicle manned by Cape Girardeau fire personnel.

They say there were 15 personnel on scene.

No one was home at the time. Neighbors say no one was living in the home.

The fire was so big, firefighters evacuated neighbors from their homes.

"We smelled smoke and didn't think anything of it at first," said Deannea Roberts, who lives right next door. "I'm so thankful the fire didn't get to our house since it's only a few feet away. We would have lost everything."

According to the fire department, the house was valued at around $50,000 to $60,000 and was a total loss.
