'Austin's Day' honored in Carbondale

Victims of college shootings honored during Carbondale event

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A small group in Carbondale volunteered their time on Saturday to honor the memory of victims lost in college shootings of recent years.

It was called 'Austin's Day' named for Austin Cloyd who was one of 32 who was killed in the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

Students brought dogs to an area nursing home to spend time with residents and also gave the home's garden a makeover.

SIU alum Christina Meo who survived the shooting in 2008 at Northern Illinois University also came out to show support.

The event is in honor of the eighth anniversary of the shooting at Virginia Tech.
