TRIGG COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The US 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton in Trigg County was closed to traffic early Sunday morning after being struck by a coal barge at approximately 4:30 a.m.

According to Keith Todd with KYTC, a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspector spent nearly an hour checking the bridge for signs of damage. No structural damage was found.

The bridge was opened to traffic.

The US Coast Guard will conduct a follow up investigation with the crew of the tow boat, according to Todd.

According to the US Coast Guard Louisville Operations Center, the Motor Vessel Marrietta Hines was heading upstream with 15 loaded coal barges when the tow struck a pier on the bridge at Cumberland River mile point 63.1.

The second barge on the stern or right side of the tow struck the pier. One coal barge in the tow started taking on water as a result of the impact. The tow boat has moved the damaged barge to shallow water near the bridge.

The Coast Guard asked that the bridge be closed pending a safety inspection of the pier.
