CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The first snow and ice of the season is here. Did it have you out buying salt and a shovel for the driveway? Well, you may not need that trip to the store after all.

It turns out there are some handy home remedies to help melt the ice.

Here are a few home remedies to try if you don't want to shovel or buy salt:

  • 2/3 cup vinegar and 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of dish detergent, 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol, and 1 gallon of warm water
  • Kitty litter

We tested the three solutions.

The vinegar and warm water seemed to work to melt the ice.

However, the kitty litter didn't melt the ice but did add traction on top of ice.

The dish detergent and rubbing alcohol worked, but it took a lot of the solution to make a difference.

A few other remedies to try include bleach and baking soda.
