SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The SEMO Major Case Squad is investigating a homicide in Scott County and the victim has been identified.

According to Sheriff Rick Walter, the body was that of Cynthia Canoy of Scott City.

Walter said the DNA results from the Missouri Highway Patrol crime lab came in Wednesday morning.

The sheriff says there are people of interest that investigators are talking to in connection with Canoy's death.

Authorities got a call from a farmer about a car fire Wednesday around 7 p.m. with a possible body inside, according to Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter.

The car was found in a cornfield off of County Road 323 a couple miles south of Scott City.

Neighbors were concerned that night. A man who lives near the cornfield says he is shaken up.

"When I came home that night, they had the lights on in the back of the house and had the guns loaded and everything else, because we weren't for sure what was going on," said Jeff Miller.

Another man says he came upon the car, and stopped to see if he could help. He says the driver's side door was open, but the car was too hot to get close up. That's when he called 911.

The SEMO Major Case Squad was activated about an hour after the body of a female from Scott County was found in the burned car.

The SEMO Major Case Squad is comprised of the Scott County Sheriff's Office, New Madrid County Sheriff's Office, Sikeston Department of Public Safety, and the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The State Fire Marshal was also on the scene the night of the incident.

"We've interviewed a few people, about 15 folks," said Sheriff Walter. "I talked to a few folks and right now to name a suspect, I am not naming anybody obviously. Again, we're still in the process of an investigation and doing interviews."

An autopsy was performed, but Sheriff Walter could not reveal cause of death at this time.
