Five people have died in a crash on Interstate 70 in Fayette County Monday.

According to Illinois State Police, the driver of a white 2002 Dodge van was eastbound on I-70 around the 57 mile post when he left the south side of the road. The van rolled multiple times and ejected several of the people in the van.

There were 10 passengers in the van and the driver.

Five people in the van were pronounced dead at the crash scene by the Fayette County Coroner's Office. Six others were taken to area hospitals.

Both eastbound lanes of I-70 are closed, and will remain closed until mid-afternoon, according to ISP.  Drivers in and around the traffic crash scene are asked to drive carefully and be aware of the presence of emergency workers and emergency vehicles.

The additional passengers were transported to area hospitals.

The Illinois State Police has assigned two Crash Reconstruction Officers (C.R.O.) and Air Operations to the investigation.

The Illinois State Police was assisted at the traffic crash scene by the Illinois Secretary of State Police, Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Fayette County Coroner's Office, Fayette County Fire Department, Fayette County Ambulance Service, Bond County Ambulance Service, Vandalia Area Ambulance Service, and Altamont Area Ambulance Service.
