CHESTER, IL (KFVS) - A Union Pacific train hit a semi truck that was crossing the tracks in Chester, Illinois on Friday evening.

It happened around 5:20 p.m. Friday on Water Road near Mill Street in Chester.

According to Trooper David Sneed, Illinois State Police, a semi truck driven by Miguel A. Avila, 61, of El Paso, Texas was headed northwest  on Water Road when the driver failed to stop for the activated railroad crossing signals.

As the truck crossed the tracks, police say the front of the Union Pacific train headed northbound hit the semi near the rear tandems.

Trooper Sneed says this caused the semi to pivot counterclockwise and hit a crossing signal, a utility police and the railroad crossing control box.

Police say the driver of the semi was wearing a seat belt was not injured.

State Police say charges are pending.
