Investigation continues after attempted child abduction in Fredericktown

FREDERICKTOWN, MO (KFVS) - Wednesday, Fredericktown police continue to investigate an attempted abduction of a 10-year-old boy.

According to Capt. Eric Hovis in Fredericktown, the investigation still very active and they are still getting lots of tips.

Police say it happened Thursday night near Newberry and Henry Streets in Fredericktown.  That is near the town's elementary school.

According to Fredericktown Police Capt. Eric Hovis, officers are looking for the driver of a dark- colored Ford Ranger.

Bonne Terre Police Chief Doug Calvert says they think that the individuals that tried to kidnap the 10-year-old boy in Fredericktown may be the same people that they are looking for with the attempted kidnapping up in Bonne Terre in mid-May.

Calvert says they are still pursing leads in trying to find these people.  Terre Du Lac Police, Bonne Terre Police, and St. Francois Sheriff Department are working together and gathering information on these people.  Bonne Terre even has an officer working full time on this case alone.

Meanwhile, according to Fredericktown Capt. Eric Hovis, they continue to get calls with leads regarding the truck. So far, none of them have panned out.

Hovis says with the connection to Gina Dawn Brooks – it's obviously something that stirs emotions in their town when there's an attempted kidnapping.

He says they take this very seriously and will continue to check out all leads and do whatever they have to do to keep the community safe.

Hovis says his department had a possible lead on Friday.

He says the department found a vehicle and driver that matched the description of one of the alleged suspects and the vehicle.

Authorities conducted a photo lineup with that person, but the he was not positively identified by the child, nor was the vehicle.

Hovis says it turns out that wasn't the person they were looking for.

According to the captain, authorities are continuing to actively look for the suspects.

Hovis says the department has received a lot of calls about the incident, along with possible leads, and he appreciates the public's help in the matter.

The driver of the truck was reported to be tall and slim white male with long dark hair with a goatee and mustache. He was reportedly wearing cut-off jeans, a plaid shirt and athletic shoes.

The passenger was reportedly an older white male in his 50s with gray hair.

Debbie Graham is the ten year old boy's mother. She says she is proud of her son for getting away.

"He left the house with his brothers and sisters, he's the youngest," said Graham. "They know now to go out by themselves. I am proud of him for getting away. It's every parents worst fear."

"Everyone just got in front of me and I tried to catch up with them," said ten year old, Zack Graham. "I saw the truck and they told me to cross in front. The driver got out and told me to get in and I said no. It forced me to the ground. I just got on my scooter and ran and caught up with my brother."

Zack says he wants other kids to know they can get away.

"If somebody tries to take you just run. Run and keep going tell them no and don't let them get you," said Zack.

"It scared him pretty bad," said Debbie Graham. "We almost took him to the emergency room to calm him down. He was brave."

Meanwhile, people in Fredericktown say they are on alert and they hope the suspects are caught.

"It's scary," said Shana Brent. "There's kids in my family and we won't let them out of our sight. We all remember Gina's story and it scares us here."
