PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) - Sometimes all you need is hope. So far that seems to be true for Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another.
After winning the Preakness last Saturday, the horse now has a shot at winning the Triple Crown.
It's the kind of moment that can transform an ordinary life into a fairy tale.
"I was screaming and yelling and stuff," said Hope Hudson.
"It was a moment in time," said Hope's mother, Jennifer Hudson.
I'll Have Another exploded Into Derby history as a little girl from Perryville watched nearby in awe.
"It makes me feel amazing," Hope said.
Hope Hudson was already in the middle of a story book Make-A-Wish trip to the Kentucky Derby. She fights a rare genetic disorder.
Her dream is to get an up-close look at the horses she loves.
"I got to go to the barns and meet the trainers," said Hope.
But little did she know there was so much more in store, when she met I'll Have Another's now famous trainer, Doug O'Neil.
"When he came out and started talking to her that was it, it was on," said Jennifer.
Hope impressed O'Neil with her head for horses.
"He is a really awesome guy and now I call him Uncle Doug," Hope said.
Originally Hope was behind another horse, Hansen. In fact, she now carries Hansen's shoe with her.
Before the Derby, O'Neil tried to sway her. Eventually they reached an agreement.
"We kinda made a deal with Doug O'Neil that if Hansen wasn't having a good day, we'd root for I'll Have Another," said Hope.
It turns out the Derby was only the start of the adventure, as O'Neil invited his "new found Hope" to the second leg of the Triple Crown.
"When they called to ask us to go to the Preakness it was surreal," said Jennifer. "For Doug to call on the phone, and say, "Hey what are you guys doing next weekend?'" said Jennifer.
That next weekend they watched another dramatic win. This time it was from the footbridge at the Preakness.
"We were screaming at the top of our lungs," Jennifer said. "It was pandemonium on the footbridge,"
In less than two weeks Hope will join the team at the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown.
"Another" is all that's needed to go from winner to legend.
"We're on a cloud right now," said Jennifer.
"It's pretty much amazing," Hope added.
For Hope, there's no doubt this story will have a happy ending.
"What are his chances 100? I'm totally confident," said Hope.
