MARION, IL (KFVS) - With a press of the lever, Doris Ray cuts up a whole cucumber with the new Slice-o-matic. It's supposed to make this part of cooking go much faster. However, at just a few slices in, we run into a snag.

We've only sliced one cucumber, and it already needs dumped and the blade needs rinsed. In fact, to get this to work, we have to wipe it clean often.

"It's not very promising," commented Doris.

Next, we try the julienne blade. Not long thereafter, the slicer must be going dull because our cucumbers won't even fully come apart after slicing.

This is not slicing our prep time in half, like the makers claim. To compare, I take a knife and slice a potato while Doris continues slicing one herself with Slice-o-matic.

Keep in mind, she has a head start.

"I think you're going to win," she predicted.

I do! My knife glides right through, easily catching up to Doris and the Slice-o-matic.

"It jams a lot. I'm afraid it'd break quickly. It is not worth $20," she said.

It's clear: the Slice-o-matic isn't making the cut.

"I wouldn't waste my money on it."

It slices, but not as quickly as promised. It's a decent, but disappointing 'D' for the Slice-o-matic on this Does it Work test.
