CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Downstate Illinois Innocence Project and students from the law school at SIU are working to get a posthumous exoneration of a man who spent 15 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Grover Thompson was convicted in 1981 of attempted murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. He died in prison in 1996.
Years later, confessed serial killer/rapist Timothy Krajcir confessed to the crime.
A group of students working with the Innocence Project found the case after it appeared in a book published by Lt. Paul Echols. The book tells Thompson's story as a transient black man traveling through Mt. Vernon who was implicated and convicted of a crime which he did not do.
Law enforcement officers will testify on Thompson's behalf at a hearing before the Illinois Prison Review Board Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 9 a.m.
