ST. LOUIS, MO (KFVS) - Red bird fans have simply gone nuts over the latest squirrel sensation. Everyone seems to be talking about "Buschie the Rally Squirrel" and his recent appearance in not one, but two play-off games.
While the Chinese calendar might say 2011 is the year of the rabbit, Cards fans believe this is the year of the squirrel.
In just a matter of days he went from regular rodent to super squirrel.
It all started Tuesday in game three with a brief performance by the squirrel. Then on Wednesday on national television "Buschie" ran right across home plate.
"I think he got in Roy Oswalt's head, after that we had it," said Cardinals fan John Spear.
It was instant fame for "Buschie the Rally Squirrel".
Jonathan Winston was at both games to see the squirrel in action. "He's got a Twitter account now. He's famous."
He also has a facebook page as he's capturing the hearts of Cardinals fans.
"Buschie the Squirrel's gotta be a good luck charm, that don't happen everyday," said Russell Friga.
"I think his name should be Stanley, and we should give him a jersey," said Stephen Schott.
It might be hard to fit him into a uniform since he's pretty hard to catch.
"They run fast and bound well," said Naturalist Greg Jacobs.
Jacobs is our local squirrel specialist, and isn't surprised by the recent rodent ruckus.
"He might have been enticed in by the smell of popcorn, nuts and those things."
He says right now it's a foraging frenzy for the squirrel population.
A big controversy is also brewing as crews at Busch are trying to capture the rally rat.
Vice President of stadium operations Joe Abernathy says there is a public safety issue. Also, he says stadium officials don't want anything that interrupts play on the field.
KMOX radio reports that seven traps have been set up to catch the squirrel or squirrels. The traps are baited with peanut butter, then a gate closes behind it. The squirrel can then be taken elsewhere.
"We need to keep Buschie in there," said Russell Friga.
Sources tell Heartland news Buschie may even show up in Philly.
"We should definitely smuggle him in," said Sawyer Elfrink.
John Spear loves the squirrel so much his place of business, Auto Trim in Cape Girardeau, printed up rally squirrel bumper stickers.
"It's very nutty," said Spear.
Animals in a stadium aren't always a good thing. Remember the billy goat in Chicago?
Most Cards fans are convinced this cute critter is no curse.
"I think he's a good luck charm," said Mark Payne.
"I hope we get to see him next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in St. Louis," said Randy Winston.
